1. Choose Your Cleanup Location
Pick a public park, trail, shopping plaza, or roadside area in Nassau County, Florida, that could use some extra care. Beach cleanup does not apply under this program. Contact us if you have questions about a cleanup location.

Invite friends or family members to join you—it’s more fun and impactful together! Remove litter and debris during daylight hours only.

2. Prepare for a Safe and Successful Cleanup
Plan ahead and make sure you're prepared with the right supplies and gear. Here's what to bring:

• Reusable water bottle to stay hydrated
• Sunscreen and insect repellent are strongly recommended
• 2–3 large trash bags (30-gallon recommended)
• Protective gloves
• Wear closed-toe shoes, hat, safety vest or other brightly colored clothing
• Optional: trash grabber tool

Check the weather before heading out and dress for the conditions.

Safety Guidelines
Your safety is a priority. While helping to beautify Nassau County, Florida, please follow these important safety practices:

• Alcohol, drugs, or intoxicating substances are not permitted during your cleanup activity.
• Do not handle hazardous materials such as hypodermic needles, used motor oil, car batteries, or chemical containers.
• Do not attempt to lift or move large or heavy objects such as drums, motors, or appliances. Instead, note the location and report it to KNB or your site captain.
• Avoid areas treated with herbicides and steer clear of any suspected hazardous substances.
• Watch for wildlife and insects such as snakes, fire ants, or birds: give them space and do not disturb them.
• If you encounter stray or domestic animals, avoid interaction and leave them alone for your safety.

3. Get to Work!

Spend at least 1.5 hours picking up litter in your chosen location. Be sure to prioritize safety—always wear gloves, avoid picking up sharp objects, broken glass, needles, or anything that could be hazardous.

Generally volunteers collect one bag of litter for each hour of activity. To make disposal easier, fill your bags no more than three-quarters full so they can be tied and lifted safely.

4. Document Your Impact
Take pictures to celebrate your good work!

If you are participating under court ordered service, photos are required to document your cleanup. This program is not for everyone, if you can not provide photos before, during, and after, we have no way to document your hours.

Participants collect and properly dispose of litter and debris collected during Individual Community Service and contact KNB with the location of hazardous waste or items too large to be collected or disposed of in available trash bins.

5. Share & Submit

To get started complete our on-line waiver, 17 and under must be signed by an adult.  Independent Work is not approved for under 16 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Complete the Waiver of Liability and Cleanup Report with each event.

Once the online report (see below) is submitted and litter disposal is confirmed, you will receive confirmation from KNB via email of 2 community service hours.  If your service is court ordered, contact us to confirm the requirements for reporting.
